What's the price of a Peugeot 306 Maxi ?
By RobinB on 11 July 2024 RallyThe Peugeot 306 Maxi Kit Car is a true legend in the world of rally. Its aggressive look and the roaring sound of its naturally aspirated XU10J4 engine, capable of flirting with 10,000 rpm, continue to captivate motorsport enthusiasts and collectors 🙂
It is therefore logical that the prices of used 306 Maxis are skyrocketing on classified ad websites! This is generally the case for all Kit-Cars of the era, which are highly sought after (Citroën Saxo, ZX and Xsara, Renault Megane, Nissan Sunny and Almera GTI...)
This rally icon, driven in its heyday by top drivers like François Chatriot, Gilles Panizzi, and François Delecour, claimed two French Rally Championship titles in 1996 and 1997.
Alongside its success in the French rally championship, it also took on a few rounds of the prestigious World Rally Championship, even achieving a remarkable second place at the 1998 Tour de Corse, finishing just behind a certain Colin McRae, with François Delecour at the wheel—what a memory! An impressive performance for a front-wheel-drive with a naturally aspirated engine, especially when the WRC cars of the time were already turbocharged and four-wheel drive. It later made way for the Xsara Kit-Car, which we know well 😉

Its rarity on the used market makes it highly coveted: according to Matter, just over 120 306 Maxi shells were produced, including 11 factory-original Peugeot Sport shells. Note that only a few companies are officially authorized to rebuild 306 Maxi shells (Matter, Enjolras, Italtecnica...). Each shell must be constructed according to the original specifications, and every build is submitted to Peugeot Sport for validation and to receive a VK.
Used Market: What is the price of a 306 Maxi?
The value of the Peugeot 306 Maxi on the used market varies considerably. If we look at the prices of recently sold models and those currently for sale, we can consider that the price of a 306 Maxi today ranges between €150,000 and €300,000 depending on the overall condition, version (Maxi Evo 1 or 2), engine evolutions, equipment, and the car's track record.
But acquiring a 306 Maxi is just the first step; you also need to keep it running! And here, watch out for the cost of parts. The famous X-Trac 7-speed sequential gearbox, for example, can exceed €30,000… that is, if you’re even able to find one! Fortunately, some specialists are now reproducing parts, allowing enthusiasts to keep these legendary machines on the road.
Recently, nine-time world rally champion Sébastien Loeb surprised and delighted fans by participating in several events behind the wheel of this iconic car:
- Rallye National de Haute-Provence 2017 (overall victory, winning seven of the eight stages)
- Rallye du Var 2017 - CFR (engine failure in the penultimate stage while leading in front of all the R5s)
- Rallye du Chablais 2018 (course opener)
- Rallye du Mont-Blanc Morzine 2021 - CFR (6th overall)
His team, Sébastien Loeb Racing, owns two models that are now available for rent. Renting a 306 Maxi: a dream come true! 🤩

This association between a modern champion and a classic car not only rekindled interest (if it was ever needed) in the 306 Maxi, but also demonstrated its competitiveness against more modern cars. Loeb's participation in these events was seen as a tribute to rally heritage and highlighted the timeless qualities of this demonic car 😈
For Your Eyes and Ears: BEST OF 306 MAXI!
A more financially accessible alternative: the 306 Maxi F2000 (F214)
Although it is possible to build a true 306 Maxi shell in A7k, the financial costs and the rarity of certain parts to strictly meet the homologation technical sheet make such a project difficult. It is therefore common to see large F2000 cars with a maxi kit for the 306 in rallies. These kits include various polyester body elements (fenders, fender extensions, front and rear bumpers, splitter, side skirts, rear wing...)
The assembly is then freer and, above all, more financially accessible.
Currently, very beautiful and high-performing 306 F214s with wide tracks can be found for €40,000 to €50,000. These cars typically produce 240 hp with XU10J4RS-type engines and sometimes even more. More than enough to have fun and certainly more reliable and less restrictive than a top-level Maxi engine that can produce 300 hp but needs to be overhauled every 800 kilometers of special stages by a specialist like Pipo Moteurs.
Buying a 306 Maxi: an investment!
Buying a Peugeot 306 Maxi Kit Car is much more than just an acquisition; it is an investment in a piece of motorsport history. Its high price is justified by its heritage, performance, and status as a rally icon.

For collectors and enthusiasts, owning a 306 Maxi is often a dream. It is highly likely that this model will continue to appreciate in value in the future. However, you will first need to have the necessary budget and be patient before finding a 306 Maxi for sale. To live this dream for a weekend, some French or foreign rental companies offer 306 Maxis for rent. Find out more!
